There are so many home whitening remedies and products out there where do we even start? Lets take you to the end.. the Results! Depending on what your looking to achieve we can go through a variety of product recommendations specific to your goal.
You may be thinking isn't white.. white? What can be so complicated about that? We often forget that simple anatomy can be blocking our reach for the white we are searching for! Aiming for Snow white results may be slightly out of reach with over the counter or even dental professional gels and you could be more in line with cosmetic dentistry! The shade of your natural tooth depends greatly on anatomy and sometimes less about the stains that build up on it! Different anatomical differences like the density of enamel, dentin, defects in the tooth and the positioning of teeth can all be a major factors in the base shade we are looking to whiten. Stain builds up on top and inside the tooths tubules. Buyer beware! Products NOT sold at or by a dental professional have limited active ingredients and may not have sensitivity relief. With an abundance of over the counter choices out there and amazing marketing these products may not get you your desired results or cause damage. Products with higher concentrations of Hydrogen or Carbamide peroxide may be damaging to the surrounding gingival tissues and should applied by a dental professional and not for solo home use.
Extrinsic stain on the outer surfaces of the enamel can be removed at your hygiene appointment with scaling, and polishing before any additional whitening products are recommended. Additional treatment options like gels can be applied to bring the stain out of the dental tubules within the enamel. Intrinsic stain inside the tooth is a bit more difficult to remove and typically requires dental professional treatment options. Start by talking to your hygienist about the types of staining you have on your teeth and what roadblocks they see in your whitening future!
Your diet plays a very important role in the shade and discolouration of your teeth!
Some foods that stain include:
Coffee
Red Wine
Spaghetti Sauce
Pizza Sauce
Ketchup
Tumeric
Curry
Dark Soda Pop
Cherries
Enamel defects can leave the teeth pitted, white marked and thin enamel showing more yellow dentin through, or grey shadows. The formation of enamel is paramount for the pearly white colour of the teeth.
Sensitivity would truly determine the route for whitening as most over the counter/store bought kits do not have the sensitivity relief needed to make teeth whitening a tolerable treatment. Tooth sensitivity could significantly increase with tooth whitening products.
One major downside of online purchases is was this product stored according to the manufactures instrcutions? Was this product health canada approved? Was this product in any way tampered with?
Most if not all dental offices have the option of purchasing whitening products for you from approved sources and typically don't markup the retail price!
A lot of online products markets for teeth whitening could contain harmful ingredients and damage your teeth further
We all know that smoking can have a negative effect and cause significant staining on the teeth. Reduction or elimination of this habit would be beneficial to maintaining a white smile.
